The popularity of EVs is finally hitting a peak – registrations for pure EVs in the first seven months of 2020 are up 112 percent compared to 2019, with over 39,000 EVs sold from January to July 2020. It’s been estimated that approximately 120 million EVs could be on the road by 2030 in China, the European Union and the United States.

To match, total energy demand for charging the EV vehicle population across China, Europe, and the United States could grow dramatically from 2020 to 2030, increasing from roughly 20 billion kilowatt-hours to about 280 billion kilowatt-hours. This substantial shift is drawing attention from more than oil companies: property owners are looking to integrate EV charge points into their parking lots and facilities as a customer benefit, an efficient use of the vehicle’s idle time in parking lots and away to meet sustainability goals. As only 75 percent of EV owners’ charging needs are met at home, there’s a significant gap in the market for public alternatives, particularly as many of the public charge points do not enable fast charging, and older models that may require hours of wait.
